OPERATIONS SECURITY
The anthrax scare of 2001 was a wake-up call. It showed that operations centers such as postal facilities and shipping and receiving departments are vulnerable to attack by biological weapons introduced as part of normal processes.
Air samplers from Sceptor are already in use to prevent such problems from occurring in the future. Sceptor equipment has been widely deployed throughout the postal system to screen mail for hazards.
It is also being implemented as part of an Integrated Detection System that finds hazardous materials before they can cause harm. One such system is built around a computer tray or console that pulls in air for sampling and analysis either automatically or when triggered by an operator.
Such systems can be used unobtrusively to stop the introduction of hazardous materials in any building with high traffic, including mail rooms, shipping departments, Department of Defense facilities, or the lobbies of central commands or operations centers.
